When my son was a U8 player, I naively agreed to help layout the fields for the upcoming season. How hard can it be, right? We were handed sheet of paper with a diagram that looked more like geometric doodles than instructions and sent on our way. Four-hours and as many arguments later, six of us completed the first of two fields. Over the next couple of years I had similar experiences. I thought there must be a better way, and set out to develop a process and tool to help me layout fields faster. I finally developed a tool and process that allowed me to layout a full-size field in under a hour, by myself.
One of my friends from high school asked if any of her Facebook friends could give her tips on laying out a soccer field. BINGO!, I thought, and sent her my tool. "Great!” she said, “but how do I use it?” I made the same mistake the my predecessors did back in U8, I gave her the tool without the training. So I put together a quick YouTube video with explanation of how to use the tool. She is now the “Field Guru” in her organization.
